Relay for Life

On June 17-18, I will be walking in the Salem area Relay for Life to remember loved ones lost, support those currently battling, and hope for a cure. Please consider sponsoring my team (Pink Posse) as we walk in the Relay.

This past year, two members of my family have died from cancer. My husband’s Grandfather and my Aunt. My Grandmother is recovering from her second bout and another Aunt is currently fighting hard.

Cancer research is making great strides at preventing and curing cancer. When someone is diagnosed with cancer, it is no longer an automatic death sentence. Not only are cures more common, but quality of life has greatly increased. Continued support for cancer research is critical.

Expanding household

No. We aren’t having another baby, but we are nearly at zoo capacity. A little over a year ago when we moved into the house, we had a fish tank, a frog (in a tank), & 2 kiddos. We still have those (minus the frog, we miss you Jumpy RIP) but added our two kitties when we moved in.

In December I had foot surgery and was barely able to get around for several weeks. I knew that I would need some serious motivation to get back on track and help me with some much needed weight loss. In February, the latest member came to live in the little pink house. Let me introduce you to Oreo (who must be walked or we all know about it).

Oreo came to us from our local shelter. We think she’s about 1 year old & a lab/greyhound mix. She didn’t have any training before we got her, so the past few months have been filled with sit, stay, lay down, walk nicely on the leash, drop it, take it, and a lot of leave it. If you don’t want to go for at least a few mile walk, I don’t suggest you use the words “let’s go” in my house.

Working on the kitchen. Ceiling is a nice light yellow, bottom is a bright white. Main color is a very bright yellow. It’s a little big birdish, but will hopefully be nice once I get it toned down.

The paint was all the sand color (walls & ceiling) when I started.

Ceiling and lower walls done. Need to finish about another 3 hours of painting the other three walls & it will be done (at least until I can’t stand big bird & re-do the bright yellow.)

Bathrooom Makeover

I have been working on the house quite a bit the past few weeks. I painted the bathroom two colors of blue with a bright blue ceiling one weekend. I rehung the mirror and put together a new cabinet the second weekend. All finished now, and it looks great.

I have been using bloglines for quite a while. It is shutting down on October 1. I am trying to switch readers to google reader. I have all my blogs converted, but I am still working on getting thru telling it I have read them. It’s taking a while, but I should be done in about the next 6 months. Ugh..

What a week!

This weekend we had our first non-parental overnight guests. My cousin and two of her cousins stayed overnight and went to the state fair. It was great having them here, but three teenage girls in a house with one bathroom was a little problematic.

Monday was a whirlwind of pre-school shopping. AAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!

Wednesday the girls started school for the year. Hope’s in fourth grade and Emily is in first.

We held our first non-family party tonight. We hosted several co-workers tonight for a potluck. I made pulled pork sandwiches and we spent time around the new fire pit I created in our back yard on Monday.

Tomorrow my brother and his family are coming for dinner. What a great week!

I am trying out a new header. I thought about doing a major redesign, but I decided to just switch out the header. I took this picture last weekend looking out over the Columbia River.

More roses

I loved the rose garden. I would like to add a section of roses in our yard. We are still discussing the perfect location, but I think they will end up near the fence in the back yard. These are a few I saw at the gardens that I would like to have in my garden.

They had nice buds and did grew into nice large roses. The bushes were not too short and did not climb. They all smelled really good.

I discovered that I really like pink and yellow together, but most yellows did not meet my criteria. I like the purples, but none of them sang to me like the pinks. I also liked some of the sunset looking roses. I didn’t get a good pic of it, but I really liked tropicana.

I think I will go with a section of pink and yellows in the back and a couple of tropicana’s in the front. We’ll just have to see how it goes.

Taking time to smell the roses

With buying the new house, landscaping, a few home improvement projects, car expenses, and furlough days, this summer was pretty tight for us. We decided to take a few short trips and enjoy our area instead of a big vacation this year.

Yesterday we spent the day in the Portland area with J’s cousin. We started at Multnomah Falls. We chose to do the short walk to the bridge (.2 miles) instead of the 600 foot climb (1 mile) to the top of the waterfall. Maybe next time I will be braver. The girls were standing in front of the short falls in this picture.

After the falls, we went to Portland’s Rose Garden. It was absolutely gorgeous. I had never been there before, and I LOVED it! I am certain we will go back. I can’t believe we used to live a few miles from there and I had no idea it was there.
